Green Gatherings: Next Green Gathering

Our October 28, 2007, meeting will be held at 7 pm at Brookfield Fire & Emergency Services (the fire hall), 110 Highway 289 East, Brookfield. Topic and guest speaker to be announced.

Our November 25, 2007, meeting will be held at 7 pm at the Middle Stewiacke Recreation Centre. Carpooling will be available from Brookfield, and we encourage those attending from other communities to carpool also. Please contact us if you want to carpool or are interested in helping out in any other way. The Middle Stewiacke Recreation Centre is located in the former Middle Stewiacke elementary school and is next to the fire station.

What Was New for Fall

Books: We are the Weathermakers by Tim Flannery--a book for teenagers on global warming.

Films:

The 11th Hour by Leonardo DiCaprio--a portrait of the planet's enviromental crisis, but with hope and solutions.

Who Killed the Electric Car? by Chris Paine, narrated by Martin Sheen--about electric cars, hybrids, hydrogen, and the future of transportation. The film's website has a great list of links to related organizations and resources.

Radio:

On CBC Radio 1--"The Current" has a "Climate Currents" section on Mondays after the 8 am news. The 10 programs are available on CD from the CBC website or by calling 1-800-955-7711.

A new progam, "Feeling the Heat," hosted by Ian Hanomansing. To view what some folks have done, visit the program's website.

Magazines: Checkerspot magazine from the Canadian Wildlife Federation.

Recycling news: Resource Recovery Fund Board Nova Scotia is planning to introduce a new Electronics Recycling Plan for the province. Phase 1 is planned to implement February, 2008, and includes computers, printers and television. Phase 2 products (scheduled for 2009) include computer scanners, telephones, and fax machines, cell phones and other wireless devices, and audio and video playback and recording systems. Did You Know? The UV Index is a simple way of expressing the sunburning potential of ultraviolet radiation at the Earth's surface. It is expressed as a number from 1 (very low) to 11+ (extremely high). In Canada, the UV Index usually varies between 1 and 10 and is included in weather forecasts whenever a value of 3 or higher is expected. The Canadian index was adopted by the World Meteorological Organization and World Health Organization and is now used worldwide.

Food News: Announced July 5, 2007, Select Nova Scotia First is an exciting new marketing campaign aimed at promoting locally grown and produced food.

For Kids:

EcoKids is Earth Day Canada's environmental education program for youth who care about the planet.

The Discovery Channel has a Canadian site specifically for kids.

Although the site is based in the United States, this kids' site from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has some neat stuff. Also from the U.S. EPA , this kids' page on climate change .

The National Geographic magazine offers weekly news from across the world with an environmental focus.

Canada's national public broadcaster has a kids' club .

Green Gatherings was founded in spring 2007 out of a desire to prevent global climate change and build thriving, sustainable rural communities. The group currently meets in either Brookfield or Middle Stewiacke, Nova Scotia, (alternating months) and is completely open to the public, especially those in surrounding communities and in the beautiful Stewiacke Valley. This Web page is a place for us to post news of our activities and collect useful resources.
